Green Computing

Green Computing is one of the latest trends that have been developing greatly in business these days. It deals with the studying and practicing of environment-friendly and efficient computing resources.

Recently, most organizations in the computer field have realized that pursuing ecological methods are in their best interests- in terms of reduced costs as well as public relations. So, going green is now not only the aim of environmental industries, but is also targeted by businesses from other fields. Take a look into the deeper aspects of Green Computing in the following sections.

What is Green Computing?

Green Computing, also known as Green IT, is the term used to define ecologically sustainable computing.  Explaining it the other way, Green IT is the practice of designing, making, utilizing, and discarding computers, and associated subunits like printers, monitors, or storage devices in an effective and efficient way without any impact on the surroundings.

A Brief History of Green Computing

In 1992, an Energy-Star program was started, which was the first manifestation towards Green IT. This happened to be a label that was given to computer merchandises that could successfully prove that they made use of less amount of energy, while providing the maximum efficiency. The first outcome of Green Computing studies was the ‘Sleep mode’ of computer that yielded great energy consumption. Following this, various other notions like thin client solutions, energy cost accounting, eWaste, etc were developed.

Objectives of Green Computing

We can compare the objectives of green computing to that of green chemistry- cut down the usage of perilous materials, maximize the efficiency of energy throughout the product life, biodegradability of factory waste, and promote recycling. However, scientists are continuing research in important fields like using the computer in a more energy efficient way and creating algorithms for efficiency-related technologies

Ways to Green Computing

There are four ways to environment sustainability or Green IT as follows:

  • Reduce the energy consumption of computers and other electronic/electrical products and use them in an efficient way
  • Reusing/Refurbishing old computers and disposing /recycling unnecessary computer good in a proper way
  • Minimizing the environmental effects while manufacturing computers and other related components
  • Designing environmentally-sound and energy efficient computers/accessories

The above four ways concentrate on different individual activities like power management, energy efficient computing, remediation of environmental contaminants, server virtualization, efficient recycling, and much more.

Green Computing has become an extremely popular technology and is gaining more attention from the public due to the initiatives of several environmental and government organizations. It should be taken as a more serious responsibility not only by organizations, but also by individual computer users. People using computers at home can also resort to these practices so as to build a more sustainable environment.
